Meet Joy

Joy Crane is an independent (science) journalist based in New York. Her articles have appeared in the OneZero, New York Observer, New York Magazine, the Center for Investigative Reporting, the Center for Public Integrity, and other publications. Her reporting has taken her around the country to investigate and research topics at the intersection of science, crime, technology and the global commons.

In addition to her writing, she also fact-check journalists and authors who contribute to various outlets. She regularly fact-checks feature stories for the naturalist magazine Audubon, the investigative newsroom, The Counter, Consumer Reports magazine, New York Magazine NPR’s narrative science show, Invisibilia, and the Wall Street Journal’s news podcast, The Journal. Previously, she was a contributing writer & staff reporter at New York Magazine.

She is a former Financial Times fellow and her work has received an award from the Robert Novak journalism foundation. In addition to her writing, she has also served as a panelist and interview subject on radio and podcasts.

A native of Brighton, UK, Joy went to the University of Chicago and spent time in Paris researching planets and superclusters. She spent a few years in New York and London doing research and fact-checks for various publications, before turning to freelance writing & fact-checking full-time. She is currently working on a feature-length story about biopiracy in agriculture.

If you're an editor who needs an extra set of eyes, or an author who has a book ready for fact-checking, I'd love to help out.
